Word of the day: בקבוק - bottle

An empty bottle

If you think that there is no onomatopoeia in Hebrew (words that phonetically imitate resembles or suggest the sound that they describe), you are absolutely not right.

The word בַּקְבּוּק bakbuk means “bottle”. If you pronounce the word several times you will realize that the pronunciation of this word imitates the sound you are hearing while pouring liquid out of the bottle – “bak-buk-bak-buk”.

תֵּן לִי בְּבַקָּשָׁה אֶת בַּקְבּוּק הַיַּיִן הַזֶּה.
Ten li bevakasha et bakbuk ha-yayin ha-ze.
Give me this bottle of wine, please.

There are also other meanings of the word בַּקְבּוּק in spoken Hebrew, for example:

  • Big hair curls can be called בַּקְבּוּקִים bakbukim because they resemble hanging bottles.
  • A Molotov cocktail is called בַּקְבּוּק מוֹלוֹטוֹב bakbuk molotov.
  • Also in basketball, the free throw lane (the rectangular or trapezoid-shaped part of the field before the free throw line) is called בַּקְבּוּק because it resembles a bottle in shape.
